They are looking for depositional basins that were in existence for enough time to allow oil to form (generally at least 20 million years). So finding copper minerals will help them know that the general area is very old.

However, if the copper or other minerals are found in metamorphic rock, then the hydrocarbon potential in the general area may be much less.
