Izola Ware Curry (1916- ), born in Adrian, Georgia, was arrested at the scene and later found to be carrying a loaded gun. During her questioning by police at New York's 28th Precinct, Curry indicated that she believed the NAACP and King had been "boycotting" and "torturing" her. When asked why she stabbed King she replied, "if it wasn't him it would have been me, he was going to kill me"(Curry, Statement to Howard Jones, 21 September 1958). She was committed to Bellevue Hospital for observation and soon found not competent to stand trial. On 20 October Curry was committed to Matteawan State Hospital for the criminally insane, where she was diagnosed a paranoid schizophrenic.Source: The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr., vol. 4: Symbol of the Movement, January 1957-December 1958, ed. MLK was not stabbed he was shot. The man charged with his murder was James Earl Ray, an escaped convict. However conspiracy theories surround MLK's death in much the same way as they do JFK. ----- In 1958, wile at a book signing, MLK was stabbed by a Black woman named Izola Curry. She was declared mentally unable to stand trial and was committed. This is where King's speech about if "I had sneezed" came from. Obviously, he survived and was later killed in Memphis in 1968.
Izola Ware CurryIn 1958, Izola Ware Curry stabbed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a 7" letter opener at his book signing in Harlem, New York. She was a homeless vagrant who had spent years in and out of mental hospitals. Doctors stated after the surgery that the envelope opener lodged in his chest near his aorta in such a way that he may have died if he so much as coughed! And after all this it was a black lady that had been looking for him for 5 years, that is what she said before she stabbed him. When he was in hospital they had to cut away 2 of his ribs to remove the letter opener.
On September 20, 1958, Dr. Martin Luther King was signing copies of his recently-published book "Stride Toward Freedom" at a Harlem bookstore when a 42-year-old black woman, Izola Ware Curry, plunged a 7-inch steel letter opener into Dr. King's chest. Curry was arrested at the scene, and was found to be carrying a loaded gun. One month later, on October 20, 1958, Curry was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and committed to Matteawan State Hospital for the criminally insane.
