They were chasing the cullens because they wanted to kill them because they are protecting Renesmee. The cullens were going to get blood for Bella to drink so that she can save herself from being eaten alive by her own offspring (I know it's gross, but it's true. Can't do nothing about it.) Bella was depleting the stock of blood at the cullens house, so Carlisle had to go and get some more. Jacob had to distract the pack so that they won't hurt anyone. Paul saw that Jacob tricked them all and went to chase the cullens. Jacob is simply distracting them so that they won't hurt Bella. Renesmee is a half-human, half-vampire, and she poses a threat to the humans living in Forks. This is why the werewolves are determined to kill her, but in doing so, they will kill Bella, which goes against what they do: protect the humans. Sam says that Bella has made her choice concerning the whole 'I wanna be a vampire', and the pack cannot do anything about it, and now that they know about Renesmee, they will not stop unless they have killed all of the cullens (who are protecting Bella and Renesmee).
