A Jew is one who practices Judaism, which is a religion.

Actually this isn't 100% correct. Halacha (Jewish law) states that a jew is someone who is born of a Jewish mother OR has converted to Judaism under appropriate rabbinic supervision.

Additionally, one remains a Jew unless said Jew converts to another religion. hence, there is no such thing as a "Messianic Jew." I know this will hurt some feelings, but this question has been answered for centuries all the way from Ruth through Maimonides to the Israeli Supreme Court.
