I am no English major, but I have never seen Little Red Riding Hood ever indicated as anything but a fairy tale. A fable is typically short and brief with a moral to the story about human nature. Thus, I would think Little Red Riding Hood is a fairly tale and not a fable.

The Little Red Riding Hood story, is about a girl who is going to her sick grandmother's house. On the way she meets a wolf in the woods, and the wolf tells her to pick flowers for her grandmother. Little Red Riding Hood goes off the path and picks flowers, even though her mother told her not to talk to strangers, and stay on the path. The wolf comes to the grandmothers house and says that it is Little Red Riding Hood in a small voice, and then the grandmother says to come in and the wolf eats her up. He then puts on her nightcap, and goes under the covers and waits for little Red Riding Hood. When she arrives at her Grandmothers house, the wolf tells her to come in, and she sees some very strange things about her grandmother, and then the wolf eats her up. A woodcutter cuts the wolf open, and Little Red riding Hood and her grandmother step out. hey fill the wolf's body with heavy stones, which drown him when he falls into a well.

In the original Grimm's Fairy Tale, Red Riding Hood is actually eaten whole by the wolf. A woodsman discovers the wolf and hears Red's cries from his stomach. He cuts the wolf open and Red is still alive -- if not sticky -- and they live happily ever after.

Yes and no. The adaptation we know and love today in America is a variation of the original Little Red Riding Hood that originated in France. Like many of the other early Fairy Tales, these ones are also quite gruesome and you would not hear it being told to little girls and boys as they are getting ready to go to sleep.

In many of the early variations the wolf ( or ogre or bzou ) eats the grandmother or leaves some meat and feeds it to the unkowning "Little Red". Most are very sexual, too, like when the antagonist asks the girl to take off her clothes as she gets into bed. The main moral of the story is apparent in most of them-don't talk to strangers-, but there are also other lessons and symbolisms. Many of the stories are really sicken,
