Mars (Greek name "Ares") was the God of War, and a secondary god of a few other things, but war was a constant in the days of ancient empires. Mars, because of it's obvious reddish tint, was given it's name, red being somewhat a color of warfare (passion) and bloodshed. The brightest star in the constellation

Scorpio is very red, and Mars from time to time appears to pass through Scorpio, as it is one of the Zodiac constellations. When Mars is near that star, the two red objects stand out. That is why that star in Scorpio was named "Antares", which means "Rival of Mars".
