ANS:Yes and No, Magnesium chloride is a compound (a salt) formed by a metal ion and two non-metal ions that are held together by ionic bonds. Those bonds do not break to release the ions until the compound is dissolved. A solution of magnesium chloride in water would contain ions. If you mean "Does it contain free ions?" the answer is "No".

an ion is formed when the amount of protons and electrons is unequal. if an atom has 8 protons and 8 electrons it will have an unstable amount of electrons in its outermost energy level (the first level hold 2 electrons, the second holds 8= 10 electrons, you must have 8 electrons in the second level to be stable)so it will bond with another atom to gain those two electrons which means that atom will now have 8 protons and 10 electrons. after that it will become an ion with a negative charge because it will have a greater number of electrons than protons. so if Mg or Cl have a greater or lesser number of electrons than protons after bonding then MgCl contains ions.

An ionic compound uses ionic bonds do bond together... In order for that to happen you must have both a metal and non metal, or poly atomic ions. In this case magnesium is a metal with an ionic charge of 2+ and chlorine is a non metal with an ionic charge of 1-

MgCI does not exist.

MgCl2 (with an L, not an I) is an ionic compound.
