Microwave radiation can be harmful, depending on the length of time, the power level and distance of an object has been exposed to it. In Russia, microwaves were banned for 13 years because of its dangerous effects.

In general use, a microwave is relatively safe to use. Problems only arise when the units are used improperly or after they are damaged. Leaking microwaves can "zap" people. The microwave energy will heat bodily tissue just like it heats a cup or coffee or tea you might be warming.

If you have any doubts about your unit having a leak, carry it into a good appliance repair shop and have them run a leak check. They will use an expensive (and calibrated) meter to check for leaks, and it will cost a few bucks. But it's your call. In fact, do call and ask about walk-in service. It's cheaper than having someone come out. (A built-in unit will require a technician to come by.) It may be better to know for sure that your unit is working properly. If you take care of your microwave (being careful not to slam the door or lean on it to jack it up), you are probably okay. (The door is the most vulnerable part of the unit, as you might have guessed.)

It certainly is not. The rays emitted have been shown to cause cancer, similar to UV rays.

Can put something in the oven if its already microwave safe?

No, just because it's microwave safe does not mean it's oven safe. The thermal mechanisms involved in microwave radiation and convective heat are completely different. Many plastics are microwave safe, but you should never put plastic in the oven.

What is a simple definition of microwave radiation?

Which microwave ovens output the least amount of dangerous rays?

A new microwave having a label stating that is meets FDA standards for minimal radiation leakage is the safe choice and will leak the least amount of microwave radiation. You can also protect yourself by not leaning against a microwave while it's operating, and not using a microwave with a door that does not close firmly.

How close to stand next to a microwave oven in safe?

You can stand as close as you like. Microwave ovens are perfectly safe and the amount of microwave radiation leaking from it is so minuscule as to be irrelevant. People generally don't realize, but there's more energy in light than there is in microwaves. Microwave leakage can't hurt you.

Do microwave ovens use electromagnetic radiation?
