This is a difficult question to answer, because it calls for a political response. In other words, there are two very different points of view, depending on which side you ask. Supporters of President Obama would say "No, Mitt Romney is not for the middle class. He only cares about the wealthy; his policies will help the richest people, and he even wants to give them more tax cuts. He has outsourced thousands of jobs, and he supports budget cuts that will hurt the poor." But supporters of Mitt Romney would vehemently disagree. They would say, "Yes, he does care about the middle class. And he knows how to help them: because he has been successful in business, he will implement pro-business policies that will improve the economy, so that more people will find jobs. He also wants to cut government spending, and that too will help turn the economy around."
It is worth noting that all politicians say they are for the middle class (in years past, they used to say they were for the "working man" (or woman). The question is whose policies will help average people more. I have no doubt that as a person, Mr. Romney cares about those who are in the middle class. But as a politician, what has he proposed, and who will benefit from his policies? Voters need to examine his various statements and come to an informed conclusion, based on what he has done and said, as well as what he claims he will do if elected. Since he is a member of a political party that is currently very conservative, you may also find it useful to look at the platform that the Republican Party supports, and see if it's something you can agree with. Another way to get an idea of his policies is to go to his website and look over the claims he makes; also read the opinions of some columnists who have a history of offering fair analysis of politics. On the pro-Romney side, these would include columnists who write for the Wall Street Journal and the Weekly Standard. On the anti-Romney side, these would include columnists who write for publications like Talkingpointsmemo.com or The Nation.
