You could say that this eruption was education and constructive in the sense that prior to May 18, 1980, scientists didn't spent lots of time with civic disaster teams.
Afterward, however, many civil disaster teams world wide have benefited from the lessons learned after Mt St Helens erupted, making living around or near an active volcano safer for people.
