There was not really a strong friendship mentioned in the novel, although i would think Mr. Van Daan might of disliked Mr. Frank due to Mrs. Van Daan being quite flirtatious with him, although Mr. Frank ignored it. Not exactly a friend i suppose, probably grateful for Mr. Frank allowing them to stay in the Annex, and probably some what irritated with him because of Mrs. Van Daan.
