Thomas Jefferson purchase land around the bridge, including the bridge itself, from King George III of England before the American Revolution. It was considered a sacred site of the Monacan tribe that inhabited Virginia in the 1500s. The name of the town that the bridge is located in is also Natural Bridge, located in Rockbridge County.
