It is not rock. It is thought that the mantle is mostly ionic water comprising hydrogen and oxygen ions in the form of a hot dense fluid. At greater depths this becomes superionic water in which the oxygen crystallises out and the hydrogen atoms move about inside the crystal lattice. It has been suggested that the base of the mantle may be a "sea" of molten diamond with diamond-bergs floating in it. The core is composed of iron, nickel and silicates.
