The country of New Zealand is made up of two main islands, North Island and South Island, as well as Stewart Island, and many much smaller islands, most of which are uninhabited. The Bay of Islands alone has approximately 150 islands. There are around 600 islands that lie within 50km of the mainland coastline.

"Small" is a relative term. North Island is over 110,000 square miles and the South Island is slightly larger. When compared to Greenland, the North Island is about eight times smaller. Compared to the island of Hawaii, the North Island is about 10 times larger. In another comparison, the North Island is smaller than Honshu of Japan.

The South Island is the world's 12th largest island and the North Island is the 14th.
