If you don't associate yourself with gangbanging or any other type of gangs, then you'll be ok.

It's better to go there with a purpose as oppose to aimlessly wondering around. This can create suspicion to a already highly suspicious housing projects curious of outsiders.

For the most part you have a lot of Latino and older people besides the traditional black population. Nickerson Gardens does offer a lot as far as history goes of urban struggle of people.

It sports a large recreation center and people there don't mind answer any general questions about the facility or the center.

The Gardens gets a lot of bad rap generally from people who have only gotten as close to it while driving on the 105 (they probably don't even know where Central Ave. is if it hit them in the face). Some of the notorious reputation of the Gardens does hold true, but just as long as you deal with older people and adults as oppose to younger kids you should be fine.

Nighttime can be another story but yet again if you have a purpose and don't draw attention you should be fine.

I've been robbed in Beverly Hills and had my car broken into in Santa Monica, but never have been victimized in Watts!
