Actually it is based on many real life fantasy style locales in the world. Here are some examples I know.
1. Sugarcube Corner is based on the Cottage Of Sweets in Carmel, California.
2. The Golden Oaks Library is based on the Chene Chappelle in Seine-Maritime, France.
3. Fluttershy's Cottage is based on the Cob Cottage at Cae Mabon, a retreat centre in North Wales.
4. The Carousel Boutique is based on the Rest House in Bournville, a village in Birmingham, England.
5. The Ponyville Town Hall is based on the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford, England
Also Canterlot's design was made into the style of Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings: Return Of The King. But the buildings themselves are base on cathedrals in Moscow such as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, and the cathedrals on Cathedral Square.
