Probably not.

It is widely believed that Ring A Ring Of Roses is about the Bubonic Plague, which devastated England in the 1300s and the 1600s.

Some people think the rhyme can be understood in this way:

'Ring around the rosies,' = When people had the black death they got rings of pustules around their fingers

'A pocket full of posies," = Posies are flowers. The dead bodies of the black death victims smelled really bad, so they put posies in the corpse's pockets to mask the smell.

'Atishoo! Atishoo!' = One of the symptoms of the black death is sneezing a lot and coughing up blood.

'We all fall down,' = Self explanatory, really. They all fell down. They died.

However, as this idea didn't emerge until the mid-twentieth century, and there is no evidence to support it, it is very likely false.

Why does the black death have a song?

You are probably asking about the song and nursery rhyme, "Ring a Ring o' Roses," which is often said to have come into being because of the Black Death. In fact, this piece was first published in 1881, and the association with the Black Death was not made in print before World War II. So the association would appear to be a myth that survives because it can easily be believed. There is a link to the plague interpretation of an article on the nursery rhyme below.

English version American version Ring around the roses A ring a ring of rosies A pocket full of posies A pocket full of posies A-tishyou [imitating the sound Ashes, ashes of a sneeze] All fall down All fall down THe first line refers to the rash appearing on the skin The second line refers to the small bouquet of flowers carried in the pocket supposedly to ward off noxious vapors The third line refers to the sneezing which would start as the disease developed The fourth line refers to death This is what I understand the nursery rhyme to mean.

What does Ashes in the water Ashes in the sea you all jump up one two three from ring a ring a roses?

This appears to be lyrics from a song or poem that relates to a somber concept of scattering ashes in water. The mention of a game like "ring a ring a roses" in connection with this imagery could suggest a contrast between the playful nature of traditional children's activities and the serious subject matter being discussed.

Can a black rose represent death?

In some ways, yes. When the Bubonic Plague was part of the Black Death, people would dance around red roses singing the song "Ring Around the Rosie". The song has a dark history though. The "Ring around the Rosie part meant the black part around the red lumps called buboes. the "Ashes, ashes" part represented the infected, dead bodies being burnt. Finally, the "We all fall down" part represented everyone dying. Dark Right?
