In Japan, 'L' is pronounced 'R'. L hides himself in isolation, no one seeing his face or hearing his voice besidesWatari. Watari also hides his face and name in the beginning of the series to protect L, seeing as he is the only link to L and the rest of the world. When L goes to Light's high school and college, he pretends to be named Ryuga Hideki. He uses the name Ryuga Hideki because he knows Kira needs a name and a face. Ryuga Hideki is also the name of a superstar. If Kira tried killing L by using the name Ryuga Hideki, the superstar may die instead. Then L explains to Light, after telling him he's L, that if he went around as L, criminals all over would try to kill him. If L, the world's top detective, were dead, then the criminal rate would shoot up. Soon Light joins the Japanese Police Force pretending to try to find Kira, but actually trying to mislead L and his assumptions. After a couple of days, L sees Kira, who he is almost positive is Light, isn't going to kill using the name Ryuga Hideki, he stops putting the star at risk. He changes his aliases to Ryuzaki. Okay I probably confused you all. Re-watch episode 3 (I think) and he'll explain it to the police force.
