It is a Christian holyday in honour of the saint who almost single-handedly converted most of Ireland. One method he used to do this was to incorporate many pagan practices into what he taught, but give it a new symbolism, ie, adding the sun to a cross. Many of today's St Patrick's Day celebrations incorporate traditional pagan practices - wearing of lucky green, clovers, and alcohol.
So it is as much a celebration of Ireland's pagan past, as it is of Patrick the missionary.
Saint Patrick's Day is March 17.
