Yes
Simvastatin is what we in the pharmacy world call an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. It is in the most prescribed class of drugs in the world. You should not take simvastatin if you are pregnant, breast feeding, or have liver disease. The most common side effects are stomach upset, rash, or headache. Statistically, this happens in about 7% of people, but only 2% need to stop the drug because of it (meaning it is not too severe). When you start simvastatin, your blood will be monitored for the next year or so. This is to watch out for a rare side effect that can effect your liver. However, the incidence of this side effect is very very low (I mean low- like one out of every 10,000 or something), and as long as you get your liver tests done, you do not have to worry. BOTTOM LINE: Simvastatin is a great drug that has saved many lives. The benefits of it are great, and the risks of a serious side effect are tiny. You probably have a greater chance of having a serious side effect to tylenol. Make sure you get the LFT (liver function test) when you first go on it, just to be safe. As a pharmacist who gives out prescriptions for simvastatin daily, I highly recommend this drug.
