Hi,

having a solution of KI implies having H20 so tin iodide will hydrolyze forming the tin oxide and HI.

Another interesting reaction is when you add KI (in solid phase) into tin iodide solution (dissolved in acetone). You will obtain a salt like this: K(SnI5)

I hope I helped you. Note that this answer could be wrong, I'm currently a student of chemistry and I have a lot to learn yet.

I almost forgot, tin iodide is usually soluble in organic compounds such as acetone, chloroform... So I recommend to use always an organic solvent

I just want to clarify that in this case, Sn has +4 oxidation state (have 2 empty orbtials so is a lewis acid). So instead of K(SnI5), u will obtain K2(SnI6). Sorry for the mistake, I was thinking in Sn 2+.

What is the role of potassium iodide in the formulation of strong iodine solution?

The role of KI in the preparation of strong iodine solution is to enhance the solubility of iodine crystals in water. Iodine is generally not soluble in water. The KI is added to help the iodine to be dissolved. -College Chemistry professor

Why Iodine is almost insoluble in water but it dissolves easily in aqueous solution of KI?

Iodine (I2) reacts with iodide (I-) to form triiodide ion (I3-).  Although I2 is insoluble in water, I3-is very soluble, so adding KI will pull I2into solution is I3-.

Will lead II iodide be more or less soluble in a solution of 0.1M KI than it will be in pure water?

If KI is present in a solution and PbI2 is being dissolved in it, there will be a greater concentration of I, this will cause the equilibrium to shift left, away from the increase, according to Le Chatelier's Principle. Shifting the equilibrium left will result in a greater mass of solid PbI2. Therefore the solubility of PbI2 will decrease in a solution of KI.

Is KI compound insoluble in water?

No, it is soluble, all the compounds of Potassium and alkali metals are soluble in water.

Is KI a weak electrolyte?

No, KI is a strong electrolyte. All soluble salts are strong electrolytes, and KI is a salt since it is an ionic compound, but not an acid or a base.

Why is KI used in estimation of iodine in tincture iodine?

this is because iodine is not soluble in water and it is soluble in potassiuim iodide. so KI is used as a solvent, and the resulting potassium iodate is soluble in watre so we can determine iodine in the ticture.

What makes iodine soluble in water?
