In the episode "Christmas Who?" that first aired December 6, 2000, spongebob showed a copy of his birth certificate that showed his birthdate as July 14, 1986. Since the first Spongebob episode aired on May 1, 1999, we can conclude that the birth certificate did not refer to his creation as a cartoon. Therefore, in the "Christmas Who?" episode, Spongebob would have been 14 1/2 years old.

Some believe that he is at least 16 because he goes to boating school, or at least 18 because he has his own home, or in his 20's because he stated that he worked 374 consecutive days in one episode and had earned 300 awards in another episode. However, we must remember that Spongebob is a cartoon. Depending on the creation date of each episode, Spongebob could be be anywhere from the age of 12 at the time the first episode aired to the age of 23 1/2 with the most recent episodes set to air in February 2009. However, this is based on the assumption that Spongebob ages with time. Only the creators of SpongeBob SquarePants know his actual age in each episode.
