St. Jean de Brebeuf was a Jesuit missionary in Canada who was martyred for his faith and his work in spreading Christianity to the Native American people. He endured great suffering and hardship while ministering to the Huron-Wendat people and refused to renounce his beliefs despite torture and ultimately being killed in 1649. He was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in recognition of his dedication to his faith and his service to others.
He died because he wanted to see the light.
Saint-Jean
The Feast Day of St. Jean de Brébeuf is Oct. 19 in the US and Sept. 26 in Canada. St. Jean de Brébeuf, St. Isaac Jogues and six other "North American Martyrs" were Jesuit missionaries who were killed in the mid-17th Century in Canada and upstate New York.
The Iroquois Indians were a noted as being very great warriors. They were not happy that the French moved into their territory and claimed it as their own. Even though John de Brebeuf was there to help the Indians, he still represented French repression to them so he was killed.
