What are the tubes of blood draws for?

The tubes used when having blood drawn serve more than one purpose. Obviously, something needs to hold the blood after it is collected. Each tube is a different color, so that different types of tests can be done. Tubes are colored differently to identify the different additives in them, and to also allow an easier time identifying the different departments that they must go to for testing. The tubes in the draw are different colors because they have differerent anticogulates in them, which is basically just a big word for how long it takes the blood to clot. Some tests require a different amount of anticogulates. A plain red tube for example cannot have any anticogulates because that's the tube you draw when your doing a blood type or crossmatch and you can't have anything to interfere with the test. Tubes have to clot before they can be centrifuged (spun down) and after they are centrifuged you can run the test on the blood. So if it is a stat order its best to get a tube with the most anticogulate so you don't have to wait as long for the blood to clot so you can run the test.

Do you have to fast for hemoglobin blood test?

No. The A1C test measures the amount of glucose bound to hemoglobin in the red blood cells. This binding process is related to the concentration of glucose present and the time of exposure. New cells are constantly created to replace old cells that are removed. Thus, the test meaures an average value of the glucose exposure over the life of the red blood cell (about 4 months). So, a one-day change, due to fasting for example, represents only a small change (one day in 120 days). For convenience, the doctor may have A1C run on blood drawn at the same time for other tests that DO require fasting. But, the nature of A1C should not require it.

What does a fasting blood sugar level of 122 mean?

Yes. You can be diagnosed as diabetic. However, if this is a one off test, do not jump on to insulin straight away. First under go GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test) and HbA1C Test. HbA1C is considered to be more reliable test in determining whether a person is diabetic or not. When you consume more sugars on the previous day, the fasting test can not be taken as reliable. Therefore, before jumping onto insulin bandwagon, better consult a good diabetician with GTT and HbA1C Results.
