John Adams claimed that Jefferson was the son of a half-breed Indian squaw and a Virginian mulatto father. To date, no evidence has been given to support this claim. Baseless claims of African heritage were often used up into the 20th century to destroy political careers. Jefferson's father is rumored to have been of Welsh descent, although little documentation exists; his mother, on the other hand, is of well documented descent from British gentry.

it is said that his mother may have been a Native American squaw, although there is little documentation available. Jefferson is said to have destroyed all documentation attached to his mother, even letters that she wrote to others.

Not as far as is known. The genealogy of his mother is well established, that of his father less so. But there is no reason to believe he was half black.
