Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer has a mix of romance and suspense. The book has a few good things going for it, but many more bad things. Firstly, Perfect characters make for a poor conflict, and conflict is what drives a good novel. Furthermore, the characters are poorly developed, as is their romantic fling. Honestly, romance novels are good because of the parts leading up to falling deeply in love. Right off the bat, instant love isn't enough; where's the teenage awkwardness? Also, the portrayal of Bella as a "damsel in distress" is a little demeaning to women, isn't it? She never helps herself, and relies solely on a preternaturally perfect boy to save her. Doesn't this also set female readers' standards so high that future love interests pale in comparison? Women can't expect any man to match up to the vampiric Edward, who is so perfect he sparkles (literally) in the sun. On top of all of that, the plot line for the story is aged well beyond its years, and there is a serious lack of new content that this book (and series) presents to the genre of "Vampire Romance". This book is good for preteen and teenage girls, and for anyways that likes a mediocre dark romance novel.
