The Wii Fit IS "working out." It raises your heart rate and you work up a sweat if you do the aerobics exercises. The Yoga helps you realign your body and promotes good posture and balance. The balance games get you moving and working your muscles in subtle ways. Strength training brings in good old fashioned, muscle-building exercises, no equipment required.
As far as it being better than hitting the gym or exercising in front of an aerobics video, I say YES. The interactivity of the Wii engages the user. You can use it in the privacy of your home, or with friends and family in a relaxed setting. Completing exercises awards you points and coins to unlock more exercises, yoga poses, balance games, etc. You can weigh in every day - a great motivator - and it charts your progress. You can also add in activities you have completed outside of the program.
Wii Fit Plus has more activities than Wii Fit & is better than Wii Fit.
