The Wizard of Oz was originally a juvenile novel by L (Lyman) Frank Baum. Mr. Baum had also written a biography of Santa Claus. Somewhat oddly the two characters are almost homonyms- Wizard of Oz- Santa Claus! they also have the same number of letters. There are certain paralells with the older ( l887 or so) Alice in Wonderland, in that the lead ( human) character is a girl, humans interact with animals and non-human ( Good guy in some cases) monsters) and so on. They are quite different fantasies. I never cared for Oz at all, Some material towards the end of the film suggest ( a guard or doorman character at the anterooms of the Wizard"s palace looked TOO much like a satire on a Bishop- and had a green costume as well ( Saint Patrick, anyone) also Camera angles seemed to suggest the more or less walled-off but integral vestibule *( for standee worshippers) in the back of a church. this was done with suggestive camera angles. I don"t like it.
The original "Wizard of Oz" movie was released in 1939, based on the 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was the book that the movie was based on. There is a series of books with many more adventures of Dorothy and other characters in the land of Oz.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an American fairy tale. It was written so children would have a story without a hidden moral. That's all it is.
There's no character named Melinda in either the original 1900 book edition or the 1939 film version of "The Wizard of Oz."Specifically, the only character with a similar name is Glinda the Good Witch. Glinda also appears in "Wicked," the successful novel and musical based upon "The Wizard of Oz." In "Wicked," author Gregory Maguire (b. June 9, 1954) introduces a character who is in neither "The Wizard of Oz" book or film and who has a name similar to Melinda: Melena is the mother of Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West.
