Zeus was afraid that he would be overthrown by a child of his as he had overthrown his father. Zeus had a child by Metis who was prophesied would bear children greater than their father. Fearing that he would be overthrown (as he had overthrown his father) Zeus swallowed the child (as his father had done to most of his children).
The story has a happy ending. The child cracked open Zeus' head from the inside and leaped out in full battle gear. Fortunately it turned out to be a girl (Athena) so didn't really count as a threat and was accepted into the pantheon.
