Yes, that's fine. All the professionally done cartilage piercings I have (five) were 16 gauge, and it wasn't like I had to special request that.

How do they do a septum ring?

First of all, pinch your septum. Do you feel that thick piece of cartilage towards the front? The pierce right behind that. First they mark your nose with a pen and ask you to look at it. If its in a spot that looks good to you, they will clamp your nose, stick a hollow, sterile needle through it (usually about 16 gauge), and feed the ring in after the needle. It is usually over in less than a minute.

Are you supposed to pierce with a bigger needle than the jewelry?

It is not a must, But it is a good idea to use a needle that is slightly bigger than the jewelery you are using to allow for swelling and to also allow air flow so that your fresh piercing heals faster. ergo if you are using a 14 gauge piece of jewelery you should use a 12 or 13 gauge needle.

What gauge barbell do they pierce your nose with?

they did mine with an 18g. you cant go any smaller or else the skin can grown over the piercing as its healing..not good!

What is the gauge of a saftey pin?

Do not pierce yourself with a safety pin. Even though they're sharp, they aren't meant for piercing flesh so it'll be much more painful than getting it done with a hollow needle by a pro. Not to mention that transitioning from the pin to actual jewelry is going to be much more troublesome and painful. Not a good idea.

Is it better to get your nose pierced with a needle or a gun?

AnswerNEEDLE NEEDLE NEEDLE!!!Piercing guns are not good for any kind of piercing...Guns are not fitted to the specific person they are piercing... And cannot really be changed to fit each individual piercing/piercee.Ever heard of the Cauliflower effect? It's when a piercing goes wrong, due to the cartilage being broken wrong, which generally happens with a gun. Keloids can also form from improper healing. We're not talking about going to mom's pincushion, grabbing a random needle, sterilizing it with a Bic lighter and sticking it through the side of your nose. A lot of people try that. NOT real smart.A "piercing needle" is a completely different story. These are the kind of needles doctors use to start IVs with. They're hollow and the tip is beveled. A piercing needle doesn't poke its way through like either a sewing needle or a gun stud does, it creates an X shape, then the jewelry is easier to put in.It's also been sterilized in a machine called an autoclave that kills any germs on the needle, and it's kept in a sealed package until it's time to pierce someone with it. Piercing needles give you a clean, easy-to-heal piercing that doesn't hurt as much as getting pierced with a gun does. I've had a lot of piercings done with both piercing needles and guns...no one will ever pierce me with a gun again. Needles are just that much better.Piercing guns should not be used for any type of cartilage piercing. The force can actually shatter the cartilage and cause for ridiculous pain and an extended healing period with a piercing much more prone to infection. It's actually illegal to pierce cartilage with gun in quite a few states.DIY piercing are also a bad idea. Going into a shop is your best bet for a safe and not as painful piercing. :)it is better to get your nose pierced with a needle because guns can not be sterilized properly so that means that there is less risk of infection .

How big is a 12 gauge needle?

Bigger than a 14 but smaller than a 10. Its a fairly large needle. To get a good visual go into a store that sells gauges like Hot Topic or any piercing studio should have some.

How do you prepare yourself for a cartilage piercing?

just don't think about it too much! the more you think about it, the more you'll freak yourself out. its not as bad as you think its going to be! i did mine myself....if i can shove a needle through my ear and come out fine then I'm sure that getting it done proffesionally isn't anything to worry about. just go and do it!

Can you pierce your lip with a sewing needle?

You can but I suggest boiling it first or using a lighter to get all the germs off- also, you need to remember that a sewing needle is super skinny so unless you can find jewelry that's the same size of a sewing needle I wouldn't do it. I pierced my own lip before but it was with an actual piece of ear jewelry so I knew that it would be the gauge I wanted it to be- plus a sewing needle kind of hurts your finger when you're trying to push it through, so I'd also suggest putting an eraser on the end of it so it doesn't stab your finger. Sure you can if you want to get an infection. Boiling it doesn't do you any good. The water allows more bacteria to collect on the needle. Also, it only sanitizes the needle. Professionals use autoclaves which completely sterilize the needle. The sewing needle is way too small to have a comfortable transition between the needle and the jewelry. Fact of the matter is that you are not trained to pierce yourself. DON'T DO IT. Wearing ear jewelry in a lip piercing is a bad idea. The back of the earring will most likely become embedded in your lip. Save up the money to get it done by a pro. Just because some people are lucky enough to not get infections doesn't mean you'll be just as lucky.

Where should you go to get your cartilage pierced?

It is much safer to get a cartilage piercing with a needle. A piercing gun can cause scaring and lumps once the piercing has healed. These things are much less common if the piercing was done with a needle.
