Yes, that's fine. All the professionally done cartilage piercings I have (five) were 16 gauge, and it wasn't like I had to special request that.

How do they do a septum ring?
First of all, pinch your septum. Do you feel that thick piece of cartilage towards the front? The pierce right behind that. First they mark your nose with a pen and ask you to look at it. If its in a spot that looks good to you, they will clamp your nose, stick a hollow, sterile needle through it (usually about 16 gauge), and feed the ring in after the needle. It is usually over in less than a minute.
Are you supposed to pierce with a bigger needle than the jewelry?
It is not a must, But it is a good idea to use a needle that is slightly bigger than the jewelery you are using to allow for swelling and to also allow air flow so that your fresh piercing heals faster. ergo if you are using a 14 gauge piece of jewelery you should use a 12 or 13 gauge needle.

they did mine with an 18g. you cant go any smaller or else the skin can grown over the piercing as its healing..not good!

Do not pierce yourself with a safety pin. Even though they're sharp, they aren't meant for piercing flesh so it'll be much more painful than getting it done with a hollow needle by a pro. Not to mention that transitioning from the pin to actual jewelry is going to be much more troublesome and painful. Not a good idea.

Bigger than a 14 but smaller than a 10. Its a fairly large needle. To get a good visual go into a store that sells gauges like Hot Topic or any piercing studio should have some.

just don't think about it too much! the more you think about it, the more you'll freak yourself out. its not as bad as you think its going to be! i did mine myself....if i can shove a needle through my ear and come out fine then I'm sure that getting it done proffesionally isn't anything to worry about. just go and do it!

You can but I suggest boiling it first or using a lighter to get all the germs off- also, you need to remember that a sewing needle is super skinny so unless you can find jewelry that's the same size of a sewing needle I wouldn't do it. I pierced my own lip before but it was with an actual piece of ear jewelry so I knew that it would be the gauge I wanted it to be- plus a sewing needle kind of hurts your finger when you're trying to push it through, so I'd also suggest putting an eraser on the end of it so it doesn't stab your finger. Sure you can if you want to get an infection. Boiling it doesn't do you any good. The water allows more bacteria to collect on the needle. Also, it only sanitizes the needle. Professionals use autoclaves which completely sterilize the needle. The sewing needle is way too small to have a comfortable transition between the needle and the jewelry. Fact of the matter is that you are not trained to pierce yourself. DON'T DO IT. Wearing ear jewelry in a lip piercing is a bad idea. The back of the earring will most likely become embedded in your lip. Save up the money to get it done by a pro. Just because some people are lucky enough to not get infections doesn't mean you'll be just as lucky.

It is much safer to get a cartilage piercing with a needle. A piercing gun can cause scaring and lumps once the piercing has healed. These things are much less common if the piercing was done with a needle.
