One can buy an external CD-Rom drive from many places. This includes online websites such as Amazon, eBay and Mwave. As well as this, one may visit a computer store to see if they have an external CD-Rom drive.
Any compatible USB or Serial external CD-ROM drive should do good justice. If your ThinkPad supports SCSI interface and has a SCSI connector you can get a SCSI external drive. I would recommend Sony or Creative CD-ROM drive.
External. Internal devices would be something like a CD Drive, while an external device is a keyboard or mouse for example.
A CD/DVD is an internal device however some varying forms can be both
If you know that you computer has a CD-ROM drive navigate to My Computer and look for an image (icon) of a CD or the name CD-ROM drive. That is likely to be the CD-ROM drive, although it may have additonal capabilities such as DVD ROM, DVD-RW etc. In a computer using Windows the CD-Rom drive is usually given the drive letter 'D'. If the images/icons names are no help right click the icons one by one and check the resulting menu. You're looking for the icon with the menu optiomn eject. That will be the CD-ROM drive. If you are looking to buy one make sure you specifically ask for a CD-ROM drive, usless you need additonal capabilities as above, and specify whether you need it internal or external to the computer.

An external drive will be a little slower because of the speed differences between SATA (internal) and USB (external). The obvious advantage to an external is changeability, ease of access, etc.
