Yes they are. They've been used to pull sleds, to point, to hunt, to track, and to retrieve! They can do it all! They are known as the most VESATILE WORKING DOG!
While not proven, some think that the German Shorthaired Pointer is a descendant of different types of German hunting, scent hounds, trail and track dogs, such as the Old Spanish Pointer, German Bird Dog, Hounds of St. Hubert (Bloodhound types), and the Foxhound. Later the English Pointer was crossed in to add speed and endurance. The German hunters were after an all-purpose utility dog that not only had a good nose, but could point, track, was an excellent retriever, gun-dog, in both field and water for both feather and fur. They also wanted a dog that was an excellent weekend hunter, but made a good family companion and watchdog. The German Shorthaired Pointer was recognized by the AKC in 1930. The German Shorthaired Pointer contributed in the development of the German Wirehaired Pointer. The German Shorthaired Pointer's talents are show dog, obedience, gun dog, retrieving, tracking trials, field trials, and hunting tests.
Shorthairs can be highstrung and high energy dogs. You would both need to be enrolled in a dog obedience class, and you would need to work with the dog dailly and give the dog a morning and evening exercise session of at leas 45 minutes. These hunting dogs also need a nutritional and balanced diet. Check with a veterinarian for details. You must be ready to commit to the dog if you get a shorthair.
I guess they could be used for hunting but they are better guard dogs. They can be used as a hunting companion instead.
No, I suggest a retriever, cocker spaniel, or an english settler.
The German Short-haired Pointer is in the Gundog group (Sporting in America) and is a medium sized, short coated breed. The origin of the German Shorthaired Pointer is not clear, but the source of the breed seems to have been the German Bird Dog, related to the old Spanish Pointer, and various crossings with local German scent hounds and track and trail dogs. When the Germans introduced the English Pointers to lend elegance to the German Shorthaired Pointer prototype, the result was a utility dog that combined sporting virtue with clean lines, good looks and sound temperament. The GSP is friendly, intelligent, and willing to please. The first impression is that of a keen enthusiasm for work without indication of nervous or flightly character.
Birman, Chartreux, Cymric, Ragdoll, Bombay and the Exotic Shorthair are my choices of a good pet.
yes! if the male and female are both shorthair their isnt a good chance but is possible
Yes, American Shorthairs generally get along with dogs and other pets.
The American Shorthair is a breed of domestic cat known for its sturdy build, short coat, and friendly temperament. They are versatile, adaptable, and known for their hunting skills. They come in a variety of colors and patterns.
As a general statement any dog who has the potential to indicate a prey ( an object, harmfull material etc) by the erect staying body language can be called as a pointer dog! but there are dogs that had been specificaly bred for centuries for this sole purpose are german short haired, long haired pointer, english pointer and some others. used in hunting its in thier blood or if given a good training to enhance this feature of dog,it will run around in zig zag manner until it finds a bird like quil,or game bird and then erecting, narrowing its body towards it to show its master that the bird is in its sight. A Pointer is a bird dog. They were bred to point out birds in the countryside, giving them the name, 'Pointer.' Pointers would flock ot birds so that their masters could kill one while it was in the air. The dog would bring back the bird to its master.(regards zainii)
