A Mammoth is an extinct genus of proboscidean (of which the Elephant belongs), often with long curved tusks and, in northern species, a covering of long hair. They lived from 4.8 million years ago to around 3,500 years ago. There are some 11 species of mammoth known from the fossil records, and they are distributed broadly across the earth. A word more recently used to mean massive or very large. A link is provided to the Wikipedia article on the mammoth. Many more facts are easily gathered, there. Some good pictures and drawings are also on display.
One prehistoric animal that lived in California was a type of icthyosaur, the Californosaurus. Californosaurus lived between 216 and 228 million years ago, during the Carnian stage of the Upper Triassic, a time when California was submerged under the ocean. Much more recently, about 10,000 years ago during the late Pleistocene, a huge variety of large mammals inhabited California. In fact, one of the best sites to find the fossils of extinct animals like Columbian mammoths, Smilodon, Dire wolves, flat faced bears, and more are the La Brea Tar Pits, located in southern California.

Ankylosaurs were covered in bony armor. Stegosaurus had two rows of vertical, triangular, bony plates on its back, that may have provided some protection. A few sauropods had bony osteoderms, too.
