The word 'a' is not a noun.

The word 'a' (and 'an') is an article.

An article is a word placed before a noun to give information about that noun:

  • The indefinite articles 'a' and 'an' are placed before a singular noun to indicate that the noun is a general word for a person or thing.
  • The definite article 'the' is placed before a singular or plural noun to indicated that the noun is a specific person(s) or thing(s).

The indefinite article 'a' is placed before a word that starts with a consonant sound, for example:

  • a cat
  • a fluffy cat
  • a boiled egg
  • a very old egg
  • a red apple

The indefinite article 'an' is placed before a word that starts with a vowel sound, for example:

  • an egg
  • an ostrich egg
  • an apple
  • an angora cat
  • an angry cat
