A Northern Cardinal is a bird and therefore is a vertebrate. Vertebrates are those species with backbones and include amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds, jawless fish, bony fish, sharks, and rays.

All species of cardinals - adults and babies - are birds and, like all birds, they are vertebrates because they have a spine and spinal cord, and an internal skeleton. They belong to the Phylum Chordata.

Mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians are all vertebrates.
