I didn't think a sparrow was a scavenger until this year. My neighbor had his deer hanging in his makeshift garage. I stepped out to feed my chickens and saw sparrows all over the carcase along with black birds and a few other species of birds that I didn't think would do this.
I think if there is hard pickings for any animal, they will resort to eating just about anything. This event happened at the beginning of December and we live in a very cold climate of the Rockies on the boarder of New Mexico and Colorado.
I would like to add, I even saw a horse fight over a deer leg with meat on it, with a dog. That was in California and there was grass all around. Go figure.
