In my experience, not at all. They tend to be rather slow and lazy, and excellent with children. I even know one who's best friend is a cat. They look rather intimidating, but are excellent family dogs. :) Large breed dogs such as mastiffs have gotten bad press primarily due to the actions of people, not the dogs themselves. As stated above, mastiffs are intelligent gentle animals. They are loving and attach very strongly with their families.
Any breed of dog, and even mutts require responsible handling. Even the breeds that are known as "biters" such as pit bulls--a reputation the breed does not deserve by the way--have gotten that reputation more by the irresponsibility of a few and over exposure in the media. If you want a good idea of the best pet for you and your family, talk to a reputable veterinarian.
The pit bull's ancestry can be traced back to roughly the 12th century, when European hunters cross-bred the molossus, an early mastiff, with the Bellenbeiser, or bull-biter--which became known as the bulldog--was used to attack dangerous game animals.

The spelling for the breed is "Bullmastiff", there is no space between the bull and mastiff, just Bullmastiff.
NO! It it's Mastiff X Dane. The Bull Mastiff came about in a similar way and was Bull Dog X Mastiff, but is now a breed in it's own right.
