A central vacuum system doesn't require a lot to maintain. Basically, you have to make sure to empty the dirt/dust canister often and stay on top of changing the filters for it to run at it's peak.

1996 E250 why does the air shift from vent to defrost when you get in a pull or get on the gas hard?

You may have a vacuum leak or a check valve isn't working in the HVAC system. When there is no vacuum in the system it defaults to defrost. Under load the engine vacuum drops to almost zero. Normally the HVAC system has a vacuum reservoir to maintain operation during this situation, but if there is a leak it cannot hold vacuum.

Will friction in a belt pulley system be reduced when the system is placed in a vacuum?

A vacuum will reduce the air resistance of the rotating pulleys and the movement of the belts. The advantages will however be minimal and hard to measure.Friction is required for the belts to move and be driven by the pulleys. A vacuum will not affect the contact between the belt and pulley.

How do you diagnose a very hard pedal when applying the brakes of a vehicle equipped with a hyrdo-booster?

You are taking too much vacuum away from the vacuum booster in the brake system. Try to find a smaller vacuum hose somewhere else in the engine to use for the Hydro Booster. The boost line for the brakes comes from the primary vacuum port on the intake manifold. Use a secondary vacuum source. That vacuum for the brakes needs to be undisturbed for correct operation of the braking system and the ABS if so equipped.

Why doe brake pedal get hard when turn off engine?

On modern vehicles the brake system is enhanced by a vacuum operated "booster". This makes the brake pedal softer and more responsive. When the engine is turned off the engine no longer produces vacuum to supply the booster so the pedal gets hard.

What can make the brake pedal hard if its not losing vacuum?

Faulty Vacuum Power Brake Booster
