A chromosome is a strand of DNA which contains genetic information which tells a cell how to carry out it's functions. Every cell in the body (apart from reproductive cells known as gametes) contains the same genetic information stored in these chromosomes. So yes, chromosomes are smaller than cells, as they are a small component of what you find INSIDE a cell.
