Commissioned Officer status is not rescinded upon retirement. It is a "transfer" to the Retired Reserves and the officer can still be called back to active duty.

Is there no rank among airmen?

In the US Air Force, "Airman" is a rank (E-2); there are also other ranks with the word "Airman" in them, such as "Airman Basic" (E-1, lower), Airman First Class (E-3, higher) and Senior Airman (E-4, higher still). All four of these ranks are collectively considered the "Airman" ranks. The enlisted ranks above Senior Airman are non-commissioned officer (E-5 and E-6) or senior non-commissioned officer (E-7 through E-9) ranks.

Do you salute chief warrant officers?

It depends which armed forces you are a member of.Generally you do not salute warrant officers. Salutes are reserved for commissioned officers.A commission is only granted by the head of state. Such commissioned officers grant warrants, hence the name.Countries have different rules regarding warrants and warrant officers. Some you salute, depending on rank and other criteria.

How can an NCO be an enlisted man when he has the word Officer in his title?

Nothing in the military has to make sense. NCOs are officers because they have supervisory authority over lower ranks, but not as much authority as commissioned officers. But they are also enlisted and have risen through the ranks from private to their present rank. Commissioned officers have been 'appointed' to their positions. A couple hundred years ago someone could become a General or Admiral with no prior military service and it is still possible to be commissioned in an advanced rank because of specialized skills or education. Doctors, for example, who join the armed forces to exercise their skill as doctors are prosaically given officer rank, simply because they have a highly specialized skill.

What is the process for a person in the navy at Rank E-5 to be commissioned as a O-2?

Getting commissioned to O-2 isn't going to happen first - you need to still become an Ensign or Warrant Officer first and work your way up the officer chain. This is why many Senior Enlisted sailors (myself included as an E-6) felt being a Senior Enlisted was preferable to being a Junior Officer. The person would have to go through one of the several Officer Candidate programs (Seaman to Admiral, OCS, etc.) in order to go through the process to gain a commission. Evaluations and recommendations of current superiors will weigh heavily on any decision to accept or reject. Essentially, 4.0 evals, distinguished record and outstanding military bearing and attitude are required. One of my first Division Chiefs went through and got commissioned - he was about as good as they get when it comes to being militarily smart. It's too bad he wasn't that great at fixing stuff, but as an officer he didn't need to worry about that anyway.
