Depth is more important than diameter for determining volume. Diameter determines pitch. Drums with larger heads are usually deeper because it sounds better that way.

It really depends on the type fo snare drum. For example parade drums are meant to be loud, but piccolo is a quieter drum due to its size. In the drum family, yes it probably is the loudest in perspective, but depending on how hard you hit it, it could be the bass drum as well.
Other than measuring it, any Auto Parts store has this information. The maximum wear diameter of the drum is cast onto the outside of the drum.
As you hit it the surface moves back and forth(vibrating) this creates a sound wave. How hard you hit it determines how much it moves back and forth e.g. amplitude. This determines the volume.
