No, a foal is a baby horse, ( or whatever other animal the term can be applied to ) and can be either male or female, while a stallion is an adult male horse.

Does the father of a foal help look after it?

In most cases, the father of a foal does not play a role in raising or caring for the foal. The responsibility of caring for and raising the foal falls mainly on the mother (mare). The stallion typically continues with his normal activities within the herd or separately.

How do stallions recognize their foals?

The stallions recognise they're colts by there smell. Ocasinally a stallion won't recognise they're foal if it is a boy ( a stallion likes alot of mares in his herd so he doesn't care if they are girls) so the stallion will take the foal as an enemy stallion and fight the poor foal who will usally die and then be eaten by bears, Seriously!

What role the stallion take in caring for the young?

In a herd the stallion will protect the mares and foals from any danger. (other horses and preditors) The stallion will either fight the intrudor or call out to the mares and they will run from the danger. in the wild a stallion will usually wait 2 hours after the foal is born. if the foal is not up and walking within that two hour period the stallion will usually kill the foal. He does not want to put his herd in danger by having a sick or slow foal slow down the herd. And he doesn't want it to suffer by being attacked by a different animal.

What color coalt would you get if you crossed a sorrel mare to a black stallion?

The foal could be a number of colors. Based on the description the stallion is either aaEe or aaEE. The mare is --ee (as her genetics at the agouti site is unknown). Research on the color of her parents and grandparents may be an indicator of the alleles at the agouti site. If the stallion is aaEe there is a 50% chance that the foal will be chestnut/sorrel. If the stallion is aaEE there will be no possibility of chestnut, however the resulting foal will be determined by the alleles that the mare has at the agouti site...which are currently unknown. If she has a single black parent, there is a 50% chance that the foal will be black (if the stallion is aaEE and a 25% chance of a black foal if the stallion is aaEe. Since black true black at the agouti site is homozygous recessive...it will be the mare's genetics at the agouti site that will determine the color of any non-chestnut foal.

If a mare gets pregnant before a foal is weaned can the unborn foal die?

A mare has an insticnt and will not I repeat will not become pregnant before the foal is weaned but that is why a stallion that the foal is not sired will try to kill the foal so he can sire another foal of his own.
