Rock crystal (white) is a variety of a quartz (gemstone). Crystal may also refer to man-made glass in general sense. Some of the other variety of quartz are Amethyst (violet), Citrine (yellow to golden), Smoky quartz (brown to gray), Rose quartz (pink), etc.

No. Crystals are formed by two different types of Adams. Sodiom and Cloride and they form in cold dark places such as caves. Gems are formed in heat and magma so that's a difference. and also gems take a LONG time to grow! That's why they are so expencive. Well, crystals are expencive to but.... ya know.

Is a gem a rock?

A gem is considered any attractive mineral or rock which when cut and polished, may be used for ornamentation. A gem can be either a mineral or a rock, but most gems are minerals. A rock is an aggregate of many minerals, with no specific structure, while a mineral has a much more ordered atomic structure, with specific physical and chemical properties. A gem is not necessarily a crystal; lapis lazuli is not a mineral or a crystal, yet can still be considered a gem due to its desirable color and traits when polished.
