Guinea pigs should live 5-7 years. A few will reach 8 years of age. So 6-8 month old Guinea pig isn't that bad, as you will still have lots of year for to look after it. If its a female make sure it isn't pregnant as they become sexually mature at 4 weeks old, and you don't want to come home one day to maybe 4 or 5 new Guinea pig baby's.
