Hedgehogs are mammals and, like all mammals, they are vertebrates because they have a spine and spinal cord, and an internal skeleton. They belong to the Phylum Chordata.

Mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians are all vertebrates.

Hedgehogs are mammals, and all mammals are vertebrates. They have a spine and spinal cord, and an internal skeleton. They belong to the Phylum Chordata.

Hedgehogs are often mistakenly believed to be related to porcupines. They are not even distantly related to porcupines, which are rodents. In fact, hedgehogs are more closely related to the shrew family, but they are in their own family of Erinaceidae.
