Although they may not ask you up front for your SSN, if you are working for a legitimate company (that means you are on their payroll, and they are paying employer taxes) you are required by law to fill out an I-9 form. This form requires your SSN. If they do not verify this information, they are a prime target to be audited by the Department of Homeland Security.
