A joystick is an input device. It receives input from the user in the form of it's operation which it then passes on to the computer. Speakers are an example of an output device. They receive no input from the user, and only output (sound in this case).

You can think of an input device as something that gives the computer information. And an output device as something that receives information from the computer.
