For amateur radio, there is a lot that you should know, including FCC regulations, radio theory, electronics, allowed frequencies, and so forth.

Being a HAM (Amateur) Radio operator is a lot of fun, and can involve you with the community as well, such as RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) and ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service).

If all the communications were to go out in the world; no phones, satellites, etc. HAM radio operators could still get messages through.

It's an exciting, and gratifying hobby.
