Light is not a mechanical wave it is an electromagnetic wave. Mechanical wave is the one which needs very badly a material medium. But light even through free space can travel.

Why do we need mediums with regards to waves?

Wave is nothing but a transferring of disturbance. So it needs a medium. But if medium is to be material then the wave is named as mechanical wave. If medium is not to be a material and if free space is enough then the wave is found to be electromagnetic. Sound is a mechanical wave and light is an electromagnetic wave

Is sound an example of an electromagnetic wave?

No. Sound is a longitudinal wave consisting of mechanical vibrations travelling through matter (solid , liquid, gas, etc). An electromagnetic wave (light) is, classically, a transversely oscillating electric and magnetic field and requires no medium in order to travel.
