Yes, the Llama worm is a real animal. There are a few theories but the most realistic one is probably that the llama is sitting on its arms and legs making them hidden under the llama. This is something that a lot of animals do (ie: monorail cat).

Some people believe that there are actual Llama Worms, also known as "Alpacapillas". From photographic evidence, scientist L.M. Curtis, phE, has observed that they seem to enjoy safe life in captivity as they are safe from predators, and that the "Llama Worm Phenomena Gene" (or LWPG, for short), seems to be a recessive gene. Llama Worms are often seen in photographs living among other llamas, and getting along quite well with them. In fact, it's almost as if the other llamas do not notice a difference.

Recently, they have been observed having buoyancy in water which may explain why their migration patterns tend to be near water and near the coast, which is downstream. Their lack of legs means they cannot paddle against the current but can float along with the current just fine. This may explain the common phrase "Llama Llama Duck", that is, you may see Llama Worms alongside ducks. However, there has not been enough evidence to explain this and marine biologists will need to work together with other types biologists in order to uncover the nature of the aqua Llama Worm. Unfortunately the controversy over the existence of the Llama Worm prevents further research.
